The town of Cullinan is home to one of the richest, most famous mines in the world: the Premier Diamond Mine. Cullinan 's proud mining history stretches as far back as 1903, with highlights including the discovery of such famous stones as the Golden Jubilee, worn by Thai Royalty; the Centenary Diamond; the Niarchos; the Premier Rose and the Taylor Burton, worn by the silver screen's legendary heroine. The Cullinan Diamond Mine's greatest treasure is, undoubtedly, the Cullinan Diamond, the largest stone ever found. This magnificent gem was sized at in astonishing 3106 carats, and was cut into nine major stones - including the Greater and Lesser Stars of Africa, centrepieces of the British Royal Sceptre and State Crown respectively - as well as 96 smaller diamonds.
What you can expect to see on the tour:- The 2 hour conducted surface tour of the mine consists of the following:
- 15min video of underground mining;
- Display of rough diamonds
- Mine shaft in operation;
- 32 ha big hole;
- Diamond cutting and polishing
- Diamond shop with 25% - 35% discount on all diamonds.
